San Francisco's Leica store celebrates its grand opening this weekend. I attended a workshop yesterday with ten other lucky folks.
The three best points I learned are:
1. Set and lock the ISO. The suggestion was to lock it at 400 during the day. Locking the ISO replicates using film. One learns to shoot with one ISO.
2. No chimping. Turn off the auto preview. Not only does this save the battery, more importantly, you won't miss the shot that happened while you were looking at the screen-chimping..
3. Learn two focus points. For example, learn 5 feet and 8 feet. Learn by feel where these two points are on the manual focus lens. Once you learn the focus points that work for you, you will be able to raise the camera to your eye and shoot. You will not need to focus. You will have pre-focused your camera.
The third point needs to be practiced. Practice at home. Practice on the street. Learn a couple of distances. Do this by setting your lens to a specific distance. Raise the camera to your eye and see how it looks. Step back or closer until the lens is focused. These exercises teach you distances.
On the street you will be able to quickly shoot without worrying about focusing.
